the teaser

Pilates (pronounced puh law tease) is named after its creator Joseph Hubertus Pilates. (1880-1967). Pilates is an exercise system designed to develop core strength, increase flexibility and range of motion, and improve posture. Using specialized equipment and floor exercises, Pilates trains the physical body while maintaining an alert mental state.

A Brief History of Joseph Pilates

Joseph Pilates had a life-long interest in fitness and health. In 1925, after working as a fitness trainer with the German army, he emigrated to the United States, and, with his wife Clara, opened a studio in midtown Manhattan.

“Joe” continued to develop his unique system of exercises and equipment, and taught at the studio until his death at the age of 87. Ahead of his time, Joseph Pilates believed that exercise was more than just a physical discipline. He drew from eastern and western philosophies to create a series of exercises that focused on calmness, being centered and whole, using flowing movement, with an emphasis on strength and flexibility. These two approaches combine to create the exercise system that we know today as Pilates.
